So that's how far back it goes!

Muistelutapani on vuonna 2007 kehittelemäni standardimeemi 40 kysymystä viime vuodesta. Tänäkin vuonna vastaan niihin englanniksi.

Mutta sitten asiaan: Uuden vuoden viettomme on vakiintunut, ollaan jälleen ystäviemme luokse menossa rakettien ammuntaan ja lautapelailemaan...<3 Toivon kaikille mahtavaa uutta vuotta 2023!

/Summing up my year of 2023, once again in English. I do this every year, just like Charlie Brooker, except you know - not funny...

1. What did you do in 2023 that you’d never done before?

Well, I had my first PhD student graduate this year. One I supervised, I mean. Not the first supervisor, but still... Important milestone. Well done Saana!

There was some other firsts like I had never before been to Hong Kong. 

Nor had I searched my son with the help of police. Twice!

2. Did you keep you New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I have kept quite many of them, but some not at all. 

 

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Babies... My neighbors got their third daughter... Oh and yes a friend of mine had an early birth of a very very small girl.

 

  4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes also this old lady who was like family to us, two of them actually. But I am so happy we visited her in the Autumn <3. Rest in peace H!

 

5. What countries did you visit?

Germany, China, Hong Kong, Azerbajzan, Italy, Estonia (kind of).

6. What would you like to have in 2022 that you lacked in 2023?
More routines! More airbnbs! So more money and more healthy life style. These are the two main factors.

7. What date from 2023 will remain attached upon your memory, and why? 

I am not sure any date will. Certainly the worst day was my child's first disappearance, but I dont want to remember it in the future.

 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Finishing the two appartment renovations was amazing - altough technically Juha was the one who did them. But I think it has been quite a packed year all together with a lot of travels and logistics... My biggest achievement could also be that this year I am finally out of the realestate closet.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I dont think I screwed up hugely. Yes some things could have been better, but overall the year has been on plus.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Not personally!

 11. What was the best thing you bought?

By far the most profitable purchase was my 5th investment apartment.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

I really love my brother's girlfriend. She is such a fresh air in the family.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

No good candidate this year for this either.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Renovation, apartments, travels

Travelling again

I am going to say sports and meal prep

We had two Christmasses, one at my mother-in-law's and one at my mother's

No

24. What was your favorite tv programme?

I have been rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel with S and BtVS is still excellent. I also enjoyed The Last of Us and watched it twice.

Nope

26. What was the best book you read?
I read (listened) 7 books this year!

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Well I guess we all loved Käärijä

28. What did you want and get?
I wanted to finnish the apartment no4 and that did happen by deadline:)

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
It was 'The Fall', which I watched at HBO Films in our China apartment.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 42. I spend it at home with my honey. He cooked me dinner and I took a nap. Heavenly birthday. Might just do that next week again. I did have a party later on with the theme of '42/Meaning of life'.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Well same answer as last year, I want the war to end so that Finnair could fly over Russia again.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2022?
More human than the previous year. Jeans and T-shirt mostly.
 
34. What kept you sane?
Taking some 'me' time on occasion.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Really difficult question, I am going to say Brandon Turner.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Well the change of the Finnish government meant that next year we will have some more money to spend. Whether that is a good or bad thing, well...

37. Who did you miss?
I miss both my aunt and my uncle who have had struggles this year.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Well, I don't know if I met Orsi this year or the last, so I am going to say my PhD student Sam who is awesome.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2023:
Buying under the market price and forcing appreciation on retail is the most effective way to upgrade net wealth.

Väitös tänään: Mihin luottamustekijöihin keskittyä jakamistalousalustalla?

Tänään jälleen väitöspäivän aika. Tänään väitöskirjaansa "Building blocks of Trust" puolustaa Jyväskylän yliopiston auditorio 3:sessa ystäväni ja kollegani Jaana Mähönen. Jaanan työ on monella tapaa kiinnostava ja merkittävä minulle myös henkilökohtaisesti. Hän on tarttunut suurta härkää sarvista - tutustunut jakamistalouden alustoihin kuten Airbnb tai vaikkapa Uber tai Fiverr ja etenkin niiden tapoihin luoda luottamusta alustalla toimivien henkilöiden ja yritysten kesken. Muistan miettineeni kun kuulin hänen aiheensa ekaa kertaa, että vihdoin joku tekee väitöskirjan, jota todella tarvitaan ja jolla on merkitystä yritysten arkeen!

Opponenttina toimii professori Kirsimarja Blomqvist LUT-yliopistosta. 

Iso päivä tämä on myös rakkaalle ystävälleni Naomi Woodsille, jonka ensimmäinen kerta kustoksena ja väitöskirjan pääohjaajana tämä on.

/ Today is once more a day of dissertation and today's PhD journey by my friend and colleague Jaana Mähönen. Jaana's work for me is personal: She has actually done something useful also for companies - she proposes a tool for companies working in sharing economy on how to handle trust in these platforms. I can see her work having a benefit even for my own businesses. When I first heard that she was doing this dissertation - I thought: Finally! This is what is so much needed. And finally a thesis that doesnt only provide theorethical, but practical contributions as well.

Hong Kong

Oltiin viime viikolla ekaa kertaa Hong Kongissa. Varmasti koko seurueeni ihastui paikkaan eikä ihme!

Tämä kaupunki on todella monipuolinen. Samaan aikaan voit tuntea olevasi Lontoossa, San Franciscossa ja Kiinassa! Vau!

Jopa tällaisen maailman matkaajan kuin minä, pääsi Hong Kong yllättämään ja voisin ihan mieluusti matkustaa tänne uudemman kerran paremmalla ajalla!

Kyberpunkkiseen yöelämäänkin pääsimme pyörähtämään kollegojeni 'Draft Beer' mieltymyksien lomassa...

Tällä reissulla olenkin ollut kiitollinen siitä, että erilaisissa seuroissa matkustaminen avartaa mieltä! Kaupunkeja voi nähdä monista eri kulmista ja kulmilla on kaikilla myös oma tulkintansa.

Aina ei tarvitse olla omassa 'tavisroolissa' eli tutkimuskoordinaattorina, äitinä ja keski-ikäistyneenä... Hetken tuulahdus tekee terää etenkin marraskuussa! Puhumattakaan auringosta! Kuten kollegani postasi - Myös minä ymmärrän, miksi Hong Kong vetää puoleensa expatteja. Voit puhua englantia joka paikassa - länkkärisoftat kuten whatsappit sun muut toimivat - mutta silti olet kutkuttavan lähellä kiinalaista eksotiikkaa. Itse en ole kantonilaisen ruoan ystävä, koska pidän enemmän tulisesta kuin makeasta, mutta Hong Kongista varmasti löytyisi myös ravintoloita kaikkiin makuihin, jos täällä oleskelisi pitkän aikaa! 

 Kiinaan verrattuna hintataso on toki kova. Hotellien hinta-laatusuhde on Lontoon luokkaa eli 150eur/yö saat postimerkin kokoisen kokolattiamattokopin. Mutta ehkä siellä käydään vain nukkumassa kun vielä marraskuussakin on uima-altaat ulkona auki ja aurinko porottaa täysillä. Hong Kongissa vierailu marraskuussa on erinomainen ajatus, koska vielä on ns. t-paitakeli, mutta ei tuskaisen kuumaa... Kesällä täällä lienee melko kamalaa...

Nyt olemme palanneet Xi'aniin jossa taas nettiyhteydet ovat niin heikkoja, että suosiolla postailen vähän lyhyempiä blogeja sen toivossa, että joku näistä menisi läpi!

Conference for Higher Education Research (CHER) - Hong Kong 2023

 

Tänään ollaan Hong Kongissa, Lingnanin yliopistolla juttelemassa tekoälyn hyödyntämisestä opetuksessa.

Tämä konferenssi on myös melkoinen scholar reunion, tutkijoiden kohtauspiste, sillä tällä kertaa mukana väikkäriopiskelijani Antti Ruonalan lisäksi ovat myös Prof. Henri Pirkkalainen ja Henri Jalo, Tampereen yliopistosta, Tore Hoel Oslo Metropolitan universitystä (ja Zhuhai'sta!) sekä unkarilainen JYU kollegani, Kristof Fenyvesi, joka myös piti keynote puheen liittyen kestävän kehityksen teemoihin. 

This conference is also quite a Scholar reunion, 

a meeting point for researchers, because this time, 

in addition to my fellow student Antti Ruonala, there are also 

Prof. Henri Pirkkalainen and Henri Jalo, from Tampere University, 

Tore Hoel from Oslo Metropolitan University (and Zhuhai!) 

and my Hungarian JYU colleague, Kristof Fenyvesi, 

who also gave a keynote speech related to the themes of sustainable development.

 

 Generatiivisen tekoälyn sovellukset puhuttavat panelisteja ja esitysten pitäjiä täällä tänään. Kristof nosti myös tekoälyn sähkön käyttövaikutukset ja siihen liittyvät mielenkiintoiset kysymykset:

- Nyt jo tiedetään, että ChatGPT vie valtavasti tietokonevirtaa: Miten tulevaisuuden tekoäly saadaan kuluttajien arkeen mukaan, jos vain osa maailmasta kykenee maksamaan tarpeeksi tekoälyn vaatimasta sähköstä... Eriarvoistuminen lisääntyy maailmassa. 

- Now it is already known that ChatGPT consumes a huge amount of computer power: 

How can the artificial intelligence of the future be included in the everyday life 

of consumers, if only part of the world is able to pay enough for the electricity

Kysymys siitä, miten voisimme hyödyntää tekoälyä ilmastonmuutoksen pysäyttämiseen ja kestävään kehitykseen on edelleen kesken. Emme voi tietää millaisten robottien kanssa tulemme elämään 3, 5 tai 10 vuoden kuluttua.

The question of how we could use artificial intelligence to stop climate change and promote sustainable development is still open. We cannot know what kind of robots we will be living with in 3, 5 or 10 years.
Tore and I also met 10 years ago at a Chinese conference, that time in Shanghai.

Toren kanssa tapasimme 10v sitten myös kiinalaisessa konferenssissa, sillä kertaa Shanghaissa. Tänään pystymme toteamaan, että 10v aikana maailma on muuttunut niin, että länkkäritutkija pystyy melko helposti kääntämään ja lukemaan kiinalaisia tieteellisiä artikkeleja mm. Deepl -tekoälysovellusten avulla.

Maailma on siis muuttunut jo sen myötä, miten tekoäly meitä auttaa. Voimme vain arvailla, mitä se tulee olemaan tulevaisuudessa.

 Today, we can state that the world has changed in 10 years in such a way that a link researcher can quite easily translate and read Chinese scientific articles, e.g. With the help of Deepl AI applications.
So the world has already changed with how artificial intelligence helps us. We can only guess what it will be in the future.
The question will also be - will we meet again in China in 10 years...

Kysymys lienee myös - tapaammeko uudestaan Kiinassa 10 vuoden päästä... 

 

AI comes to classroom in Konnevesi

 

Today AIWARE project visited Konnevesi high school. The aim of this project is to help students, teachers and schools to adapt the imminent future of AI coming to our classrooms all over the world.

Within the next 4 years, this project is not only creating a teachers' driving licence of AI for classrooms but also lists the competences we need to know to teach AI and with AI in our classrooms. In our first meeting, we met half a year ago in Bottrop.

AIWARE project has been visiting Jyväskylä this time so this gave us also the great opportunity to start piloting some of our AI learning scenarios in real classrooms.

Current head teacher of Konnevesi High School, Mari Jämsen was kind enough to invite us to visit the always proactive 'School of 2030'.

We had a limited consortium from Finland, Germany and Lithuania represented.

Konnevesi is situated about 1h drive from Jyväskylä and have collaborated with JYU on various technology enhanced learning projects in the past like IMAILE and LEA.

Our pilot in the classroom today was in a Geography lesson. The topic was cities and countryside. Our aim was to use machine learning for them to use image recognition to teach their own machines to identify 'country/city'. One task was to show the laptop's webcam the image from the window and see if they recognised country in this case...  The kids are extremely fast to learn and got 90-96% correct! 

We also talked a little on AI Ethics - why would AI get it wrong? What kind of bias they might get based on the training data...?

This was a nice little pilot - we will be doing much more of these in the coming months. If you want us to show up to your classroom in Finland, Germany, Greece or Lithuania - send me a message! 

Azerbajdzanissa jälleen

 Tänään olen jälleen Bakussa, Azerbajzanissa. Aiemmin olen vieraillut täällä 2019 ja 2017.

 Tällä kertaa mukanani on pieni kuopuksenne isänsä hoivissa sekä veljeni, joka nykyisin työskentelee myös Jyväskylän yliopistolla. 

Azerbajzan on täynnä yllätyksiä ja hämmentäviä tilanteita. Ensimmäisenä iltana nautimme traditionaalista 'Pilav' riisiä, joka oli paistettu tandooriuunissa taikinan sisällä lihojen ja granaattiomenakastikkeen kanssa.

Tämä erinomainen ravintola löytyi vain kivenheiton päässä 'Maiden towerista', joka on eräs Bakun keskeisimpiä nähtävyyksiä keskellä vanhaa kaupunkia.

L oli elementissään ja alkoi heti tehdä tuttavuutta paikallisten tyttöystävien kanssa omaan 'bossy' tyyliinsä.

Alkupaloiksi söimme mm. munakoisoa pähkinätäytteellä, tulista kastiketta, juustoa ja paprikamunakoisosalaattitahnaa. Namsk!

Bakun rantapromenadilla oli menossa tiukat shakkiottelut

Pieni pentumme juoksenteli äidin ja iskän väliä muovipullo kourassa varmaan puolen tunnin verran kulutellen energiaa pimenevässä mutta lämpöisessä Azerbajzanin yössä.

Olimme M:n kanssa täällä siis työreissussa, mutta ehdimme katsastaa myös jonkin verran nähtävyyksiä. Kyllähän tämä on kaunis ja ihmeellinen kaupunki ja maa, juuri niinkuin muistinkin.

Tunnen kiitollisuutta, että olen saanut vuosien jälkeen palata moneen paikkaan. En enää pidä matkustamista lainkaan itsestäänselvyytenä. Se on etuoikeus saada olla täällä. Ja tuoda perhekin mukana.

Bakusta lähtee lentoja takaisin Eurooppaan harvaseltaan, oikeastaan Istanbul oli lähestulkoon ainoa paikka, jonka kautta voi lentää. Aiemmin lensin toki Kiovan tai Moskovan kautta, mutta sattuneesta syystä 2023 tämä ei ole mahdollista. Maailma on muuttunut niistä ajoista 2016-2019 kun täälläpäin aiemmin matkustin.

Mutta ikuinen tuli ei ole kadonnut Yanardagista. Tämä rinne on ollut tulessa jo Marco Polon silkkitieajoilta ja varmasti kauemmankin aikaa. Vulkaaninen maasto nostaa kaasun pintaan tällä alueella ja vuori on todellakin ikuisessa tulessa.

Bakua ympäröivät myös massiiviset öljykentät. Sadat ja tuhannet pumput pumppaavat öljyä yötä päivää. Paikalliset tuskastelevat, koska bensan hinta on kohonnut 50senttiin per litra...

Monet vierailemamme paikat olivat minulle ennestään tuttuja, mutta halusin näyttää mm. Zorothrianisen Ateshgah temppelin eli tulitemppelin myös läheisilleni. 

Täällä vaikuttavassa paikassa on aiemmin ollut myös ikuinen tuli kaasuvarannoista.

Tuli kuitenkin sammui ekstensiivisen öljynporaamisen myöstä.

Zoroastrianilaisen uskonnon mukaan tuli on väline ihmisille kommunikoida yliluonnollisen maailman kanssa.

Heille samoin pyhiä asioita olivat vesi, maa jne. elementit. He jättivät myös kuolleensa liinoihin käärittynä saalislinnuille ilman hautaamista tai tuhkaamista.

Monenlaista ehdimme kolmen päivän aikana nähdä täällä taas. Töitä tehtiin myös DIRNA-projektin parissa, mutta siitä lisää toisessa postauksessa.

Today I am again in Baku, Azerbaijan. I have previously visited here in 2019 and 2017.

This time I have with me your little youngest in his father's care and my brother, who now also works at the University of Jyväskylä. Azerbaijan is full of surprises and bewildering situations. On the first evening, we enjoyed traditional 'Pilav' rice, which was baked in a tandoor oven inside dough with meats and pomegranate sauce. This excellent restaurant was found just a stone's throw from the 'Maiden tower', which is one of Baku's main attractions in the middle of the old city. L was in her element and immediately started to make friends with local girlfriends in her own 'bossy' style. For starters, we ate, among other things, eggplant with nut filling, hot sauce, cheese, and bell pepper eggplant salad paste. Yummy! There were intense chess matches going on on the Baku beach promenade. Our little puppy was running between mom and dad with a plastic bottle in hand for probably half an hour, consuming energy in the darkening but warm Azerbaijani night. 

We were here with M on a work trip, but we also managed to see some sights. This is indeed a beautiful and wonderful city and country, just as I remembered. I feel gratitude that I have been able to return to many places after years. I no longer take traveling for granted. It is a privilege to be here. And to bring the family along. Flights from Baku back to Europe are infrequent, actually Istanbul was almost the only place you can fly through. I used to fly via Kiev or Moscow, but for obvious reasons, this is not possible in 2023. The world has changed from the times of 2016-2019 when I previously traveled in this area. 

But the eternal fire has not disappeared from Yanardag. This slope has been on fire since Marco Polo's Silk Road times and certainly for a longer time. Volcanic terrain raises gas to the surface in this area and the mountain is indeed in eternal fire. Baku is also surrounded by massive oil fields. Hundreds and thousands of pumps pump oil day and night. Locals are frustrated because the price of gasoline has risen to 50 cents per liter… 

Many of the places we visited were familiar to me, but I wanted to show, among other things, the Zoroastrian Ateshgah temple or fire temple to my relatives. In this impressive place, there has also been an eternal fire from gas reserves. However, the fire died out due to extensive oil drilling. According to the Zoroastrian religion, fire is a means for people to communicate with the supernatural world. For them, water, earth, etc. elements were also sacred things. They also left their dead wrapped in linens for birds of prey without burying or cremating. We managed to see a lot here again in three days. Work was also done on the DIRNA project, but more on that in another post.
