Väitös tänään: Miten organisaatiot voivat jatkuvasti kehittää digitaalisia palveluitaan arvolupaukset mielessä pitäen?

 

Tänään on jälleen akateemisen juhlan paikka! Väitöskirjaansa "Toward Continuous Digital Service Innovation" puolustaa tänään Jyväskylän yliopiston vanhassa juhlasalissa kollegani ja ystäväni Jenny Elo!

Kustoksena toimii professorimme Tuure Tuunanen ja opponenttina toimii Brian Fitzgerald Limerickin yliopistosta, Irlannista.

On ollut ilo seurata Jennyn matkaa väitöspäivään. Hän kuuluu ihmisiin, jotka eivät pidä itsestään mitään melua mutta tekevät valtavasti työtä taustalla, oman työn lisäksi läheisten, yhteisöjen ja yhteiskunnan eteen. 

Jennyn kävellessä sisään kutrit hulmuten, juhlasaliin koko yleisö rentoutui. On ilo kuunnella väitöstä, jossa väittelijä todellisuudessa palaa halusta päästä keskustelemaan ja haastamaan tekemisiään. Jos hän on millään tasolla hermostunut tai epävarma - ainakaan se ei ulospäin näkynyt missään vaiheessa!

Jennyn esiintyminen on vakuuttavaa ja luonnollista, koska hän todellakin tietää mistä puhuu. Hän on lukenut ja kirjoittanut tästä aiheesta vuosia ja se näkyy väitöksessä todella vahvasti.

Jotkut puhkeavat väitöksessä kukkaan ja tänään siltä sinun kanssasi todellakin tuntuu!

Paljon onnea erinomaisesta väitöksestä ja väitöstyön päätökseen saattamisesta! Aivan mahtava meininki! /Today is once again a day of academic celebration! My colleague and friend Jenny Elo is defending her doctoral dissertation, “Toward Continuous Digital Service Innovation,” today in the University of Jyväskylä’s old festival hall!

The custos is our professor Tuure Tuunanen, and the opponent is Brian Fitzgerald from the University of Limerick, Ireland.

It has been a joy to follow Jenny’s journey toward this day. She is one of those people who never makes a fuss about herself, yet works incredibly hard behind the scenes — not only on her own research but also for the people around her, her communities, and society at large.

When Jenny walked in, her curls flowing, the whole audience relaxed. It is a genuine pleasure to listen to a dissertation defense where the doctoral candidate is truly eager to discuss and challenge her own work. If she was nervous or uncertain at any point, it certainly did not show!

Jenny’s performance is convincing and natural, because she truly knows what she is talking about. She has read and written about this topic for years, and it shows very strongly throughout the defense.

Some people blossom in their defense, and today that is exactly how it feels with you!

Congratulations on an excellent defense and on bringing your dissertation project to completion! Absolutely wonderful energy! And if you give me the floor this evening, I intend to say what I really think — one day you will be the president of AIS, and you can then say that Kati predicted this in her blog in 2025 ;) <3

Väitös tänään: Millaista mielen muutosta tarvitaan rakennusalan digitalisaatioon?

 

Tänään on jälleen yksi yliopistotyön parhaista päivistä, väitöspäivä. Tänään tietojärjestelmätieteen väitöskirjaansa “Digital organizational culture and digital mindset in industrial craft enterprises” puolustaa kollegani ja ystäväni Seyma Kocak. 

Seyman kustoksena toimii dekaanimme Pasi Tyrväinen ja opponenttina professori Amir Haj-Bolouri (University West, Ruotsi). 

Tapasin Seyman ensimmäistä kertaa vuosia sitten, kun työskentelimme yhdessä Positive Learn -projektissa. Seyman pääohjaajana on toiminut minunkin "Doctor father" eli väitöskirjaohjaajani Professori Jan Pawlowski Rurh West yliopistosta, Saksasta. 

Seyman työn motivaationa on ollut työskentely erittäin perinteisellä käsillä työskentelyn alalla - rakennustyömailla saattaa olla varauskirjat täynnä eikä aikaa tai kiinnostusta digitalisaatioon tai digitaaliseen muutokseen. Mutta mitä tapahtuu tulevaisuudessa, kun esim maksaminen siirretään täysin digitaaliseen maailmaan, opetusmateriaalit digitalisoituvat, moni asia on helpompi ja nopeampi toteuttaa esimerkiksi tekoäly tai teknologia-avusteisesti. Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee mm. sitä, että mitä rakennusala yrittäjien ja työntekijöiden päissä tulisi muuttua, jotta he pärjäisivät paremmin teknologistuvassa maailmassa. 

On mahtavaa kuunnella erittäin huolellisesti ja perusteellisesti koottua väitöstyötä, joka yhdistää laadullisia ja määrällisiä tutkimusmenetelmiä ja kokoaa niitä suunnittelutieteen näkökulmaksi.

Väitös pidetään Alvar Aallon suunnittelemassa Jyväskylän päärakennuksen pääsalissa, mikä huikea miljöö puolustaa väitöskirjaa!

Aamulla keskustelimme akateemisista traditioista ja siirtymäriiteistä. Henkilökohtaisesti nautin näistä hetkistä ja siitä, että välillä saamme pysähtyä jonkun työn äärelle ja pienet asiat kuten pukeutuminen, tarjoomiset, erilaiset puheet jne - auttavat meitä juhlistamaan kolleegoittemme uralla etenemisaskeleita. Koen, että moni muukin ala voisi hyötyä tällaisista perinteistä, vaikkeivat ne välttämättä ole "tehokasta tuottavaa työaikaa". Tämä väitös sai minut miettimään, että millainen voisi olla rakennusalan uralla eteenpäin siirtymisen riitti... 

Prof. Haj-Bolourin kysymykset etenkin tieteen filosofian pohjalta ovat osittain tiukkoja, mutta Seyma puolustaa työtään tiukoissakin kysymyksissä. Keskustelua on mielenkiintoista kuunnella, kun työ, joka perustuu suurimmaksi osin konkreettisiin empiirisiin hyötyihin kohtaa syvälliset teoreettiset ja filosofiset kysymykset.

Today is once again one of the best kinds of days in university work: a defence day. Today my colleague and friend, Seyma Kocak, is defending her doctoral dissertation in Information Systems Science, “Digital organizational culture and digital mindset in industrial craft enterprises.”

Seyma’s custos is our dean, Pasi Tyrväinen, and her opponent is Professor Amir Haj-Bolouri (University West, Sweden).

I first met Seyma years ago when we worked together on the Positive Learn project. Her main supervisor has been my own “Doctor father,” my dissertation supervisor Professor Jan Pawlowski from Ruhr West University, Germany.

The motivation for Seyma’s work stems from her experience working in a highly traditional, hands-on field—construction sites where schedules may be fully booked and there is little time or interest in digitalisation or digital transformation. But what happens in the future when, for example, payments move fully into the digital world, learning materials become digital, and many tasks can be carried out more easily and quickly with the help of AI or other technologies? This dissertation explores, among other things, what needs to change in the minds of construction-sector entrepreneurs and employees so they can thrive in an increasingly technological world.

It is wonderful to listen to a very carefully and thoroughly compiled dissertation that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods and brings them together from a design science perspective.

The defence is held in the main auditorium of the Jyväskylä main building, designed by Alvar Aalto—a spectacular setting for a dissertation defence!

In the morning, we talked about academic traditions and rites of passage. Personally, I enjoy these moments and the fact that from time to time we pause to appreciate someone’s work. Small things—such as clothing, refreshments, and various speeches—help us celebrate the milestones in our colleagues’ careers. I feel that many other fields could benefit from such traditions, even if they are not necessarily “efficient productive working time.” This defence made me wonder what a rite of passage might look like for career advancement in the construction sector…

Professor Haj-Bolouri’s questions, especially those stemming from the philosophy of science, are at times challenging, but Seyma defends her work confidently even under tough questioning. It is fascinating to listen to a discussion where work based largely on concrete empirical benefits meets deep theoretical and philosophical inquiries.
