Conference for Higher Education Research (CHER) - Hong Kong 2023

 

Tänään ollaan Hong Kongissa, Lingnanin yliopistolla juttelemassa tekoälyn hyödyntämisestä opetuksessa. 

Today we are in Hong Kong, at Lingnan University, talking about the use of artificial intelligence in teaching.

Tämä konferenssi on myös melkoinen scholar reunion, tutkijoiden kohtauspiste, sillä tällä kertaa mukana väikkäriopiskelijani Antti Ruonalan lisäksi ovat myös Prof. Henri Pirkkalainen ja Henri Jalo, Tampereen yliopistosta, Tore Hoel Oslo Metropolitan universitystä (ja Zhuhai'sta!) sekä unkarilainen JYU kollegani, Kristof Fenyvesi, joka myös piti keynote puheen liittyen kestävän kehityksen teemoihin. 

This conference is also quite a Scholar reunion, 

a meeting point for researchers, because this time, 

in addition to my fellow student Antti Ruonala, there are also 

Prof. Henri Pirkkalainen and Henri Jalo, from Tampere University, 

Tore Hoel from Oslo Metropolitan University (and Zhuhai!) 

and my Hungarian JYU colleague, Kristof Fenyvesi, 

who also gave a keynote speech related to the themes of sustainable development.

 

 Generatiivisen tekoälyn sovellukset puhuttavat panelisteja ja esitysten pitäjiä täällä tänään. Kristof nosti myös tekoälyn sähkön käyttövaikutukset ja siihen liittyvät mielenkiintoiset kysymykset:

- Nyt jo tiedetään, että ChatGPT vie valtavasti tietokonevirtaa: Miten tulevaisuuden tekoäly saadaan kuluttajien arkeen mukaan, jos vain osa maailmasta kykenee maksamaan tarpeeksi tekoälyn vaatimasta sähköstä... Eriarvoistuminen lisääntyy maailmassa.

How can the artificial intelligence of the future be included in the everyday life 

of consumers, if only part of the world is able to pay enough for the electricity 

required by artificial intelligence... Inequality is increasing in the world.

Kysymys siitä, miten voisimme hyödyntää tekoälyä ilmastonmuutoksen pysäyttämiseen ja kestävään kehitykseen on edelleen kesken. Emme voi tietää millaisten robottien kanssa tulemme elämään 3, 5 tai 10 vuoden kuluttua.

The question of how we could use artificial intelligence to stop climate change and promote sustainable development is still open. We cannot know what kind of robots we will be living with in 3, 5 or 10 years.
Tore and I also met 10 years ago at a Chinese conference, that time in Shanghai.

Toren kanssa tapasimme 10v sitten myös kiinalaisessa konferenssissa, sillä kertaa Shanghaissa. Tänään pystymme toteamaan, että 10v aikana maailma on muuttunut niin, että länkkäritutkija pystyy melko helposti kääntämään ja lukemaan kiinalaisia tieteellisiä artikkeleja mm. Deepl -tekoälysovellusten avulla.

Maailma on siis muuttunut jo sen myötä, miten tekoäly meitä auttaa. Voimme vain arvailla, mitä se tulee olemaan tulevaisuudessa.

 Today, we can state that the world has changed in 10 years in such a way that a link researcher can quite easily translate and read Chinese scientific articles, e.g. With the help of Deepl AI applications.
So the world has already changed with how artificial intelligence helps us. We can only guess what it will be in the future.
The question will also be - will we meet again in China in 10 years...

AI comes to classroom in Konnevesi

 

Today AIWARE project visited Konnevesi high school. The aim of this project is to help students, teachers and schools to adapt the imminent future of AI coming to our classrooms all over the world.

Within the next 4 years, this project is not only creating a teachers' driving licence of AI for classrooms but also lists the competences we need to know to teach AI and with AI in our classrooms. In our first meeting, we met half a year ago in Bottrop.

AIWARE project has been visiting Jyväskylä this time so this gave us also the great opportunity to start piloting some of our AI learning scenarios in real classrooms.

Current head teacher of Konnevesi High School, Mari Jämsen was kind enough to invite us to visit the always proactive 'School of 2030'.

We had a limited consortium from Finland, Germany and Lithuania represented.

Konnevesi is situated about 1h drive from Jyväskylä and have collaborated with JYU on various technology enhanced learning projects in the past like IMAILE and LEA.

Our pilot in the classroom today was in a Geography lesson. The topic was cities and countryside. Our aim was to use machine learning for them to use image recognition to teach their own machines to identify 'country/city'. One task was to show the laptop's webcam the image from the window and see if they recognised country in this case...  The kids are extremely fast to learn and got 90-96% correct! 

We also talked a little on AI Ethics - why would AI get it wrong? What kind of bias they might get based on the training data...?

This was a nice little pilot - we will be doing much more of these in the coming months. If you want us to show up to your classroom in Finland, Germany, Greece or Lithuania - send me a message! 

Artificial Intelligence Ready Classroom

 

Today I am once again visiting Ruhr West Hochschule in Bottrup, Germany to kick-off our 4-year long project, Artificial Intelligence Aware Classroom.

The idea of this project is to assist teachers and students to use AI in Classrooms. We will create learning scenarios linked to AI competency framework as well as to curriculum of 7 to 12 grade.

We have a small but efficient project team from Lithuania (Vilnus Tech), Germany (Ruhr West), Greece (Ellinogermaniki Agogi) and of course us, the Finns (University of Jyväskylä)

This topic seems to be trending in 2023: The discussions on how ChatGPT will interrupt teaching are already on-going! How will the teachers be able to recognize whether the student did their own homework or did AI do it for them?

The discussions also included on how we will do research around this topic, how to publish and how to build social media campaigns on the topic.

As usual, the project which firstly seems to have a long time to do the initial reporting, will have to work quite intensively this Spring.

Luckily we are an efficient team that so far is enjoying the work...

We even had time to visit a closed coal mine as our sightseeing part! Fantastic times as always. Thank you for hosting, Ruhr West!

 /Tänään suunnittelimme tekoäly-luokkahuoneessa projektille aktiviteetteja ja tutkimusta seuraavan 4 vuoden ajaksi. Tällä hetkellä keskustelu ChatGPT:n käytöstä käy kuumana myös suomalaisessa mediassa.  Ajatuksena on tuottaa sisältöä ja tutkimusta tukemaan opettajien työtä ja oppilaiden oppimista tekoälyavusteisesti luokkahuoneissa yläkoulussa ja toisella asteella (lukio+ammatillinen). Kuin aina, oli mukava vierailla keski-Saksassa.

Ljubljana

Viime viikolla olen ollut varsinaisella Euroopan tourneella. Lensin tiistai-iltana Barcelonaan, ihanaan pikku Viladecansiin LEA-projektin kokoukseen.

Keskiviikkoiltana matka jatkui Venetsian Marco Polon lentokentälle lentäen ja siitä yöbussilla Ljublijanaan, Sloveniaan. Tämä oli ainoa tapa saapua pitämään Keynote-esitelmääni tekoälystä ajoissa Slovenian opetusministeriöön, jossa komission Digitalisaatio Working Group oli koolla.



Venetsiassa en ole koskaan käynyt ja tälläkin kertaa se jäi vain haaveeksi. Mieleen painui lähinnä Marco Polon kentän äkäiset hyttyset jotka iskivät kimppuun salamana kun poistui kenttärakennuksesta...

Viime viikon työt menivät siis niin sanotusti kompromissin puolelle. Paljon silti saatiin aikaan ja vaikka oman konsortion kokous jäikin Barcelonassa kesken, oli silti äärimmäisen tärkeää tulla tähän policy makerseja täynnä olevaan kokoukseen. Mikä mahdollisuus projektilleni vaikuttaa siihen, mitä tulevaisuudessa tapahtuu alalla - mihin panostetaan rahaa, mihin ei ja niin edelleen. Komissio on kuitenkin minun urallani suurin rahoittaja. Pelkästään tänä keväänä olen kirjoittanut yhteensä 12 Erasmus+ / Horisontti2020 -hakemusta. Todella mahtavaa tulla kutsutuksi asiantuntijaksi kertomaan, mihin suuntaan kannattaisi seuraavalla ohjelmakaudella laittaa rahaa. Opin ja jaoin tietoa. Oli mukava tehdä työtä yhteisössä jota kiinnostaa, mitä sanottavaa minulla oli. Palkitsevaa.

Sloveniassa olen vieraillut kerran aiemmin. Tämäkin oli EU-projektin kokous, mutta tuosta on niin pitkä aika etten muista oliko se 2008 vai 2009. Tuolloin myöskään en vielä pitänyt tätä Finnworld blogia, joka on ollut pystyssä kuitenkin jo vuodesta 2012...

Kamalasti en jaksanut Ljublijanaa kiertää, turnausväsymys sai vallan, mutta kävin silti kävelemässä keskustan kauniita siltoja läpi - lohikäärmeet yms pakolliset kohteet tuli katsottua. Ljublijanassa on myös mielenkiintoinen graffittitaiteen ulkoilmamuseoalue, jossa pistäydyin... mutta suoraan sanottuna extremematkustamisen päälle kun vielä laittaa helleaallon (+36-40C) niin jaxut olivat hieman koetuksella.

Slovenia on kaunis. Vuoret ovat lumihuippuisia niinkuin Bulgariassakin, jossa ehdin vierailla maaliskuussa. Ljublijana itsessään oli hipsterimpi kaupunki kuin 10v sitten. Keskusta on charmikas - ihmiset puhuvat hyvää englantia ja työskentelevät kovaa. What’s not to like?

Sellainen viikko. Sitten pikavisiitti Suomessa sisältäen oman pikkumurun kaa hengailua, pyykin pesua, siivousta, yksi baby-valokuvaus ja kahdet synttärit. Elämänihän on täynnä rapuja eli tällä kertaa vuorossa oli ison murun elikkäs Juhan lisäksi tätini Ritva. Pieni kuvaamani ystäväni tytär on hänkin äitinsä tavoin rapu ja syntyi siis juhannusaattona <3. Nii ja toinenkin baby ehdittiin käydä Tampereella katsastamassa juuri ennen hänen mahtipontisen nimensä julkistamista. Kyllä nyt sataa vauvoja vasemmalta ja oikealta.

Kiireisen viikon jälkeen ei ole aikaa jäädä lepäilemään vaan olen jälleen liikkeellä, tällä viikolla kohti Tukholmaa ja Euroopan Taikaita 2019. Tällä viikolla siis Shorinji Kempo aiheisia blogeja varmaankin pukkaa, stay tuned:)

 

/ Last week I was on a European tour from Barcelona to Venice to Ljublijana and back to Jyväskylä. These were business trips of Learning Technology Accelerator project. First the consortium general assembly meeting in Spain and then European Commission's DELTA (Digital Education: Learning, Teaching and Assessment) task group's meeting keynoting on Artificial Intelligence on Education. All went well and this week I head off to Stockholm, this time for Shorinji Kempo European Taikai - stay tuned for stories this week if you are interested in Martial arts:)

Will robots take over the world?

 

So this last week - I went to Sofia, invited by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education to talk about Artificial Intelligence and Innovation in Europe on this area. This week - off to Ukraine, but that is a different story.

This conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, Educate to Create, has relevance: the estimation is that 40% of the future Jobs will be taken over by AI. This is distruptive to our society where we have been accustomed to go to school, get a job and stay in that job for the next 40 years until retirement. This will not be the future. Does this mean that the job security will be a thing of the past? Not necessarily.

This conference talked a lot about educating the students in schools and also higher education towards transversal skills. These skills are the ones needed to do the Jobs that machines simply cannot do. Major other concerns in the conference raised were: so-called life drop-out students, how could AI help them? (My suggestion was to let AI identify them by their smartphones and push education at the personalized manner to their favorite screens... we need to go where the people are - listen to what they have got to say for developing these emerging technologies)

Indeed the higher education faces the point in reality where it is in danger of falling behind. - We have hired teachers and lecturers at tenure track positions. For those of the readers that do not know, that means - for life. And we are facing the fact that the Jobs of tomorrow require skillsets that were not around when they got their training... No longer can we repeat our everyday life as it is, but the future requires initiation, active participation and adoption to the changing technologies and reqirements of the labour Market. This is the applies directly to teachers.

Even university lecturers are required to keep up with the advancements of the technologies around. This is a necessity. This is the future. Siri will soon be able to scout through the Learning resources of the internet - present us with the most suitable courses. Tell us which modules we already know and indeed how long does it take for us to study the ones we can learn from. Our students will be able to do this as well. This means - if you are uninspiring lecturer repeating things they already know - they will get super snappy lecturer from ted talks to explain it faster and better for them.

Today, I was inspired by so many things. Did you know that Malta has the only Ministry that has combined both Education and Employment? I Think Finns - we could learn from this. Did you know that western Civilization in the world might only have to work 4h per day when the Robots take over..? Did you know that Bulgaria is the country who puts education first - to the front lines... and why wouldnt they..?

Over the two days in Bulgaria, I was very impressed by many things - but not the least by the debuty minister of education, Ms Karina Angilieva. Her drive, her insights, her vision, her humble nature of inviting experts and learn from them. This is a product of Bulgarian Education system and for a small system, they should be proud.

In Finland, we have 6M people. In Bulgaria we have 7M. We have the same size identity - innovate or be left behind... luckily, both countries are excelling on the things we do. I have a suggestion: Let’s do it together! No just Finland - Bulgaria. But the rest of the Europe. Our artificial intelligence is in the cutting edge - drive on this momentum. Not let our fears to stop us from adopting to the world where not only our cars drive themselves but our students use the best quality Learning resources around the world to excell. This is our times as Europeans to talk about what we want our artificial-intelligence driven world to look like. Let’s do this!

/ Lyhyesti suomeksi viime viikolla Bulgariassa paikallisen opetus- ja tiedeministeriön kutsumana, puhumassa tekoälystä. Koko päivä ja eilinenkin oli innostavaa - Eurooppalaisina meillä on mahdollisuus olla vahvempia yhdessä. Tämän tulevaisuuden teknologian hyppysissä, olemme kaikki nöyriä. Toiset pelkäävät tulevaisuutta, jossa terminaattorit tulevat ja ottavat vallan maailmalla. Olemme kuitenkin todella kaukana siitä maailmasta, jossa koneilla on tietoisuus. Tällä hetkellä tekoäly on ns. Heikkoa tekoälyä ja itseasiassa tätä on ollut olemassa jo vuosikymmeniä. Kehitys näyttää näennäisesti nopealta mutta on itseasiassa hidasta - todellisiin tekoälyn eettisiin vaaroihin on siis matkaa. Ne ovat edelleen Science Fictionia, tapahtuen ehkä tulevaisuudessa...

Silti - tämä kaksi päivää Bulgariassa inspiroi minua. Miksi? No koska tekoäly on upea leikkikenttä - paljon tilaa innovaatioille. Toisekseen siksi että tämä pieni maa, (7M ihmistä) on monella tapaa samankaltainen kuin omamme. Meidän täytyy pinnistellä menestykseen ja Bulgarialaisilla on huikea varaopetusministeri, täynnä tarmoa, energiaa ja ennen kaikkea nöyryyttä oppia muilta. Viisas ei ole se joka tietää eniten, vaan se, joka seuraa eniten tietävää ja innovoi sen pohjalta.

Kaikenkaikkiaan kokemuksena tämä päivä oli rockstar-tykitystä. Paljon ideoita. Paljon uusia kontakteja. Toisinaan työllä jota teen on merkitystä. Se oli tänään. Huomenna takaisin täyttämään lomakkeita... nämä tietysti töitä jotka onneksi tulevaisuudessa robotit hoitavat puolestamme... Uskonpa niin - että tämä yhteistyö tulee poikimaan yhteistä myös tulevaisuudessa. Kaksi päivää well spent.
