Learntech Accelerator Kicks-off

Two weeks ago was one of the most challenging working weeks of my life so far.
 It was time for me to step into the shoes (or in my case skirt!) of coordinator for the first time in my European projects working history.

To make things more difficult - the Description of Action, which is like the bible of the EU projects, said that the kick off shall be organised in Brussels - not in, let's say Jyväskylä, which would have made things a lot easier for this first-time coordinator...

So the new project, Learntech Accelerator, or as we call it "LEA", is about innovative procurement of learning technologies and in a nutshell, about how the supply & demand can come together and make something new in this market.

 The 'Mother' of this project is of course Ellinor Wallin, IMAILE's project manager and coordinator, who has now trusted me with her 'baby'...

 Even though LEA bases on IMAILE, which I have been the technical manager for about 18 last months of it and 9/17 partners were the same, it was still a room of mostly unfamiliar faces to me... Many partners have changed staff - that is pretty normal in software projects as well as universities of course, that people come and go. Throughout my working life, I have been blessed to work with hundreds of people. This kind of change of a working climate has it's challenges as well as opportunities.

Personally I find kick-off meetings very exciting. You get to meet a lot of new people and of course in the case of LEA, it was looking at 35 experts of their own areas in the room: So much competence all around which gave me a lot of confidence that this project will absolutely make great results, no doubt about that.

 In our consortium, we have experts on procurement, learning technologies, schools, law, contracts, procedures, policies etc. Procurement is a complicated process and it requires different fields of expertise coming together to ensure smart decision making.

 One of the key issues on why procurement of learning technologies is such a hard process is that the buyer and the user are almost never the same person. The chain of software/hardware development and purchase could for example be modeled like this:

Developer -> Seller -> Buyer (municipality, school etc.) -> User (teacher, student)

Then we come to the challenge of how to get this whole line of people to talk the same language, to understand what they say to each other...

 I am in favor of meetings where people discuss & work rather than sit behind their computers.

 This is why I had told my wp leaders that they have to use their time wisely and get the consortium active and away from their email. This is somewhat of a unique situation when the whole consortium is together. It will only happen six times during the project duration, so this means that we should be utilizing this time to actually contribute towards the work, not just sit there writing emails (which often is the case if a project meeting is not very well organised).
I was very happy with LEA's kick off.

 We worked hard for three days.

 Learned to get to know each other and established some common expectations of what this project will be about.

In European projects, there is always many levels of agendas going on. Companies want to sell and network. Researchers want to study and gather data. Managers want to get the reports done etc.

 It's good to keep in mind that people have perhaps many levels of agendas in mind when they come to a meeting. Coordinator's job is not to destroy all the levels, but to align enough of them in order to get the work done described in our project bible, the Description of Action, or DoA.

 Organizing a meeting isn't really that easy. 16hour days for 5 days in a row took it's toll, I was exhausted when the week was finally over. I literately had time to go for two walks of 30minutes in the Grande Place of Brussels.  Next meeting will be more relaxing, I have promised myself:) I am however now very excited of LEA as I see that the team is very strong and competent. Thank you WP leaders and participants of making this Kick-off happen. Let's do this!

Kolmen Brysselin reissu

 Terveiset Keski-Euroopasta! Pyrähdin elilen aamukoneella Brysseliin ja kirjoittelen tätä Luxembourgin junasta (publishing delay). Olen tämän viikon yhdisteltynä Business&pleasure-matkalla manner-Euroopassa. Kohteina ovat Luxembourg, jossa osallistun EU-projektini viimeiseen arviointikokoukseen; Brysseli, jossa ehdin käydä moikkaamassa kavereita ja Berliini, jossa on viikonloppuna Kempoleiri ja lisäksi käyn moikkaamassa Elinaa ja Vanttea, jotka tämän vuoden asustavat Saksan pääkaupungissa. Jos tässä ei vielä ollut tarpeeksi agendaa niin laukku on täynnä taftia eli tarkoituksena olisi myös Elinan ommella minulle karonkkamekko tuossa viikonlopun aikana.. Tämä on juurikin sitä aikaoptimismia..

Olisin halunnut tehdä reissun kiertomatkatyyppisesti: Jyväskylä-Helsinki-Luxembourg-

Brysseli-Berliini-Helsinki-Jyväskylä... Mutta tämän reissun hintalappu oli 2500eur.
Sen sijaan Jyväskylä - Helsinki - Brysseli - luxembourg - Brysseli - Berliini - Brysseli - Helsinki - Jyväskylä maksoi rapiat 600eur lentolippuja ja satasen verran junaa päälle. Aikamoinen säästö. Vaikka työmatkaosaan ei omia rahoja menekään niin yritän löytää yliopistolle järkevän budjetin matkustusta, tietenkin. On kuitenkin todella ärsyttävää, että etenkin Finnairin operoimille reiteille kaksisuuntaiset reissut ovat järkyttävän paljon halvempia kuin lentää myös samaa tietä takaisin.. Olen marissut tästä jo vuodesta 2006, jolloin Kiinasta paluuni piti tehdä Lontoon kautta kun se vaan ei käy että jättäisi toisen pään lennolle tulemasta.. ARGH! British airways, SAS jne ovat muuttaneet policyitään, mutta finski vaan porskutteee kahden suunnan lennoillaan. Joku siellä laskee ettei pelkät yhden suunnan lennot kannata.

Väikkärin edistymisestä kiinnostuneille sanottakoon että se on viittä vaille valmis. Tietysti esitarkastajat antavat vielä lausuntonsa ja niin edelleen että työ ei ole vielä loppunut, vaikka reissussa olenkin. Mutta koko syksyn valvomattomat yöt ovat tuottaneet tulosta. Tohtoria minusta ei kuitenkaan 12.12 tule niin kuin olimme alun perin mietiskelleet ohjaajani kanssa. Loppujen lopuksi onko väitös tämän vuoden puolella vai ensi vuoden alussa - tuntuu epärelevantilta. Tärkeämpää on se, että ollaan ohjaajien kanssa tyytyväisiä siihen, että se on juuri niin hyvä, kun tämän nipun artikkeleita kanssa saa aikaan.

Toivon että tämä tarkoittaa vihdoin sitä että saan palata säännöllisen bloggaamisen makuun. Kempoleiripostauksia kun on Lissabonistakin vielä kaksi draftseissä. Yritän saada ulos tällä viikolla ennen ku uusia pukkaa.

/Greetings from Central Europe! I flew this morning to Brussels and now in a train to Luxembourg for my EU project's review. I then go back to brussels and Berlin to see some friends and there is also a Kempo camp in Berlin... If that's not enough for an agenda, i am planning on having a Dress made, which i bought fabriks for from Finland before leaving.. My friend Elina who does all my dresses, is living in Berlin this year - hence this is my chance to get the Dress of my dreams as well as to see her..

For those wondering about my Phd, it is almost done. Of course there is still externals comments on it and such to fix, but the whole autumn to work has paid off. There is still no set date for the viva, depending in last schedules it should be sometime in between mid December to end of January.

I am trying to become a much more regular blogged again as all of my nights are not occupied by PhD related issues. I've still got last two posts from European Taikai waiting in my inbox to get published. Be patient! They will come soon.

Vohveleita ja punaisia kattoja

Pari viikkoa sitten olin kolme päivää Brysselissä. Kerroinkin asiasta jo, mutta kuvia jäi vielä varastoon, joten tässäpä tulee elämää työmatkan sivussa Brysselissä, vol.2.

Tältä näytti mun illallinen yhtenä päivänä. Oliiveja, juustoo, salamia ja leipää. Tartteeks elämässä muutakin syödä. Olipas hyvää. Mun ehdoton heikkous on oliivit ja juustot.

Rakastan näitä Keski-Euroopan mukulakivikatuja. Niissä on sitä jotain tunnelmaa. Vielä parempi olisi, jos olisi hieman lämpimämpi ilma.

Aina yhtä mielenkiintoista nähdä mitä saa jos tilaa Cosmopolitanin;)

Mun partsilta näkyi tällaiset maisemat aamulla. Kyllä kelpaa. Hotelli oli muuten Queen Anne, joka sijaitsee aika lähellä keskustaa, ehkä kolme korttelia Grande Placelle.

Kolmen tähdän hotelli, jossa oon ollut ennenkin. Ei mikään maailmanluokan hienoin, mutta aamiainen on hyvä ja hinta kohtuullinen. Lisäksi nykyään sen edessä ei enää partioi edes ilotyttöjä aamuisin, niin kuin vielä 4v sitten. (Huomaa että oli mun pomon löytämä paikka)

Suurelta osin mun aika brysselissä näytti tältä:

Mutta sentään pääsin livahtamaan yhtenä iltana vaihtamaan parempaan. Tämä Kiinassa teetetty mekko + jakku on ollut kovasti käytössä tänä keväänä.

 

Ohitettiin iltakävelyllä paikallinen sateenkaarikatu.

 Ja kas sieltä löytyi heti seuraa.

 Minun seurueeni oli kuitenkin enemmän kiinnostunut suklaakaupoista.

 Ja tietty tästä putiikista... Sanoinkin, että miespuoliset kolleegani juoksevat Desigualissa ostamassa vaimoilleen ja tyttöystävilleen tuliaisia. Mulle riittää tax free, josta kaapataan mukaan litra Bombay Safirea. Toimii joka kerta, ihan ku taika.

 Kun kerran Belgiassa oltiin niin pitihän niitä vohveleita syödä.

 Päälisvaihtoehtoja olisi ollut hirmuisesti. Tein itse sen virheen, että otin mansikoita ja sitten seuraavana aamuna kiroilin.

 Nämä Euron vohvelit saa aivan Brysselin ykkösnähtävyyden vierestä, joka ei varmaan isompia esittelyitä kaipaa. Pieni mitätön mies, joka usein pukeutuu mitä oudompiin kuteisiin. Ei kuulu mun suosikkinähtävyyksiin Euroopassa, mut oli taas meidän sakissa joku, joka ei sen pissiä ollut vielä nähnyt.

 Kohtalokkaat mansikat.

 Olis vaan pitänyt pidättäytyä Nutellassa...

Few weeks ago I went to Brussels on work, but of course you can always fit in some extra curricula activities which in Brussels are 1) Waffles, 2) Coctails, 3) Manneken Pis, 4) Shopping (for Chocolate or Desigual)... Not bad for two nights in the EU Capital. I even had time to see my very favourite girl;)

Euroopan sydämessä

Työmatkan sivussa ehdin tehdä hyvin vähän mitään muuta...

 Valitettavasti siinä vaiheessa kun kokous päättyy, alkaa uusi sisäinen pikkuryhmän kokous ja tyypillisesti vapaa-aikani alkaa n. klo 19 tms. Siinä vaiheessa on jo aika pimeää...

 Projektin uniformu. Joo olis voinut ottaa bilettävämmät vaatteet illaks. Listalle seuraavaan miitinkiin.

 Kun olet Belgiassa, syö vohveleita.

 Ja suklaata.

 Brysselissä tykkään kävellä pikkukatuja keskustassa.

 Niissä on sitä jotain niin eurooppalaista tunnelmaa. Nyt varsinkin kun olen ollut pitkään Kiinassa, oli todella mukava haistella eurooppalaista ilmaa ja tunnelmaa.

 Jos käy Brysselissä vaan pikaisesti, on parasta keskittää kävely Grand Placen ympärille.

 Arkkitehtuuri huimaa päätä.

 Brysselissä tuntuu siltä kuin olisi sekä ranskassa että saksassa että hollannissa samaan aikaan.

 Yritimme käydä syömässä King's tawernissa, mutta siellä oli liian täyttä meidän 10 hengen porukalle.

 Niinpä dinneri muuttui olueksi.

 Tämän putiikin sisustus on ihanan keskiaikainen.

 Niinpä päädyimme hamppareille.

 Sosiaalinen ohjelma on useimmiten illalla jopa tärkeämpi osa kokousta kuin päivän menot. Silloin luodaan ne ihmissuhteet, joiden avulla sitten yhteistyö toimii jatkossa.

This week in Brussels, I managed to go out in a couple of evenings, to experience the European athmosphere on European streets. I like Brussels, because it often feels like being in both France and Germany in the same time. On the other hand you have saxon middle ages ale pubs and on the other side copies of Nôtre Dame everywhere. As always despite of the little time, I had good fun in Brussels. You can sleep when you are dead, right?
