Learning from the Extremes goes Dublin

  Today I am in Trinity College Business School in Dublin, Ireland. This time it is about supporting digitalisation for rural schools of Europe. EC co-funded Learning from the Extremes project is giving out 1,2M euros to schools technology and professional development aquisition. Finland is included as one of the 10 countries getting this support.

/Tänään olen Trinity College:n Business Schoolissa, Dublinissa. Tällä kertaa kyse on digitalisaation tuesta syrjäseutukouluille. Learning from the Extremes -projekti jakaa 1,2M€ koulujen teknologia- ja osaamisen kehittämisen hankintoihin ja Suomi on mukana yhtenä 10:stä maasta, jotka saavat tätä tukea.

 

Learning from the Extremes Call for proposals was open during this summer and ended at the end of September 2022. Finnish schools, high schools and vocational schools could receive 150k euros. /Learning from the Extremes Call for proposals oli avoinna kesän ja päättyi syyskuun lopussa. Suomalaisille peruskouluille, lukioille ja ammattikouluille oli jaossa 150 000 euroa ja projektien arvioitu määrä 10.

Most of the projects applied the maximum 20 000euros which meant that we could totally fund 7 projects from the 45 applications. Total of 138 000 euros will be given for these schools.

/ Suurin osa hakijoista oli kuitenkin budjetoinut projektinsa maksimisummalle eli 20 000 eurolle, joten valittujen projektien määrä väheni. Jotta budjetti ei ylittynyt, pystyimme rahoittamaan seitsemän projektia ja lukitsemaan niihin yhteensä noin 138 000 euroa.  Suomesta tuli yhteensä 45 hakemusta.

 These rural schools development projects will begin on 1st of December and they will last one year. Today we are talking of support for those schools carrying out these digitalisation development period.

/Nämä syrjäseutukoulujen kehittämishankkeet alkavat 1.12. ja kestävät 12kk. Tänään keskustelemme tukitoimista kouluille tämän digitalisaation kehittämisjakson ajalle.

 

 We are planning for example expert visits to workshops, measuring impact, online traings etc.

Suunnitteilla on mm. asiantuntijavierailuja työpajoihin, vaikuttavuuden mittaamista, yhteisiä koulutuksia jne.

 

The winter in Dublin has been mild so far.

Learning from the Extremes is a rather ambitious project because it wants to achive the digital change of over 80 schools within only 2 years!

Learning from the Extremes on varsin kunnianhimoinen projekti sillä kahden vuoden sisällä se todellakin aikoo mullistaa syrjäseutukoulujen digitalisaation tason selkeästi paremmaksi. Siinäpä sitä hommaa sitten onkin...

/Minulla on edelleen pikkuinen apulainen mukana tälläkin kertaa, koska hän on rohkeasta luonteestaan huolimatta edelleen varsin herkkä tyyppi ja kolmeksi yöksi ilman äitiä jääminen olisi varmasti ollut haastava tilanne. Iskän kanssa Irlantiin tutustuminen on toistaiseksi toiminut kivasti. Hotellin kokolattiamattoiset sokkelokäytävät ja chesterfield sohvat kelpaavat pienelle hoplopiksi toistaiseksi... ensi vuonna katsotaan sitten tilannetta uudestaan...

Back at EU project world: Learning from the Extemes

Today I am so glad to be back in Athens after 7 years! Last time I was also here for EU project meeting - for back then Open Discovery Space. I have also been here in Athens exactly 9 years ago.. Even though I was privileged to meet some of the old crew this time - We are still missing some of the Greats... Henri, Tore, Thomas, Kerstin, Nikolas, Peter... I miss you guys so much! ./ Tänään olen takas Ateenassa 7 vuoden jälkeen! Mikä fiilis! 2015 edellisellä reissulla oli kyseessä myös EU projektin työmatka eli ODS-projektin arviointikokous. Samoihin aikoihin vuodesta eli kesäkuussa olen ollut Ateenassa myös vuonna 2013 eli 9v sitten! Vaikka olinkin onnekas sen suhteen, että monet 7-15vuoden takaiset kollegat ovat edelleen samoja - osa heistä on lähtenyt muihin hommiin tai toisiin projekteihin: Henri, Tore, Thomas, Kerstin, Nikolas, Peter... I miss you guys so much.

Words cannot describe how I feel about doing MY JOB again. For the last two years, all meetings have been online. I admit that having a baby on that period was useful, but still... So happy we are back at f2f meetings./ En voi enempää korostaa sitä miltä tuntuu tehdä *mun työtä*. Viimeisen 2,5 vuoden ajan kaikki kokoukset ovat olleet Zoom-välitteisiä ja vaikka toki meillä perheenlisäyksen kanssa tämä oli harvinaisen kätevää...

I can admit that for a while I was thinking that my job was not mine. This is the job that I am most good at. Where I am valued. /Niin täytyyhän se myöntää, että oma työ ei pitkään aikaan ole tuntunut omalta. Tämä on sitä MINUN työtä. Missä olen hyvä ja arvostettu.

It is so enjoyable to sit in a meeting after 15 years of collaboration with these Greek and other international partner and know exactly what they mean when they say something./On todella nautinnollista istua kokouksessa jo yli 15 yhteisen työvuoden jälkeen kreikkalaisten ja muiden kv-partnerien kanssa ja tietää täsmälleen, mitä he ajavat takaa jollakin asialla.

And that feeling when two Greek partners don't understand each other but you do. And better yet you can summarise it in 2 sentences. Aaaaah. /Se tunne, kun kaksi kreikkalaista ei ymmärrä toisiaan ja sitten itse kiteytät sen kahteen lauseeseen. Ah. .

I love my job and it is my hope that COVID will not kill it. People need to meet. Even by flying. /Rakastan työtäni ja toivon ettei Covid-19 voi sitä tappaa. Ihmisten täytyy tavata toisiaan, myös lentojen päähän

I am aware that this is an unpopular view of the world./Tiedän et tänä päivänä tällainen kirjoittelu voi johtaa julkiseen tuomitsemiseen.

On the other hand I refuse to change because the world has. I still like travelling: Adventures, cultures, people. /Toisaalta kieltäydyn muuttumasta, koska maailma on muuttunut. Pidän edelleen matkustamisesta: Seikkailusta, kulttuureista, ihmisistä.

This time I also had the pleasure to bring along a part of my family. My spouse celebrating his 50th birthday.../ Tällä kertaa minulla oli myös ilo tuoda osa perhettäni mukana tälle työmatkalle. 50-vuotissynttäriään juhliva puolisko...

Introducing Computational Thinking and Acting project

Mikä on Computational Thinking and Acting (CoTA)-projekti?  

Teknologioiden kehittymisen myötä yhteiskunta muuttuu ja tarvitaan osaamista, jota ei perinteisissä kouluaineissa ole opetettu. Tekoälyn sanotaan vievän jopa 60% töistämme, jolloin on tärkeää opetella taitoja teknologian rajapinnassa.

Comptational thinking and acting -projekti CoTA lähestyy tätä ongelmaa alakoulun opetusta uudistamalla: nyt tutkitaan, miten ohjelmoinnin, mallintavan ajattelun ja ongelman ratkaisun taitoja voidaan oppia fyysisten aktiviteettien kautta, kaikkiin oppiaineisiin integroituen. Tällaisia aktiviteetteja voi olla esim. Rakennettavien robottien ohjelmoiminen toimimaan ipadilla tai vastaavat tekemällä oppimimisen tehtävät.

Projektissa kerätään euroopanlaajuisesti fyysisen laskennallisuuden hyviä käytänteitä oppimisskenaarioiksi eli opettajat saavat oppimiskenaariokokoelman, jonka avulla heidän oppilaansa tulevat olemaan paremmin varautuneita tulevaisuuden muuttuvaan ja teknologistuvaan maailmaan. Lisäksi hankkeen pohjalta kehitetään partnermaiden opetussuunnitelmia vastaamaan tulevaisuuden tarpeita.

Eli seuraavan kolmen vuoden ajan koordinoin myöskin tätä Erasmus+ projektia yhdessä saksalaisten, virolaisten ja kreikkalaisten partnereitten kanssa.

What is Computational Thinking and Acting (CoTA) project in a nutshell?

Our world is changing due to the rapid developments in technology. Computational thinking and acting skills are becoming vital for each students even at the start of their learning paths. Goal of CoTA (Computational Thinking and Acting) Erasmus+ project is to develop and validate new learning and teaching ICT solutions in Computational Thinking and problem solving in primary schools. CoTA will explore the concept of Physical Computing and provide open learning activities for programming including teacher materials and teacher training. CoTA will also develop scenarios for including programming into different subjects and a competence framework of Physical Computing linked to existing national curriculas in Finland, Estonia, Germany and Greece.

So in the next three years, I will also be coordinating CoTA alongside with my dear friends and partners from Germany, Greece and Estonia. Looking forwards to it! 

Ombudsmen offices in 9 Caucasus Universities Established

Last week I was in Georgia, in the final conference of AESOP project. For three years, we have worked in this Erasmus+ on establishing ombudsmen offices in Azerbajzani, Georgian and Ukranian universities. The project has been successful in fulfilling its objective and it's been my job to provide good practices of Students' rights management alongside with five other European Universities from Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal and UK. We as the European partners also conducted quality review on the project's activities to explore the impact and processes of the newly established ombudsmen offices.

This really interesting journey has taken me to exotic places like Baku, Vienna, Kiev etc. Definitely also to places that I would not have seen without the hospitality of my native colleagues in Azerbajzan, Ukraine, Georgia and Austria. This group of people have also bonded over the years quite a lot. I could really see us writing more project proposals together, sharing Phd students and making Erasmus exchange of staff agreements etc. I am proud of the achievements of the target countries. They have taken steps toward students knowing their rights in the universities' life as well as having an independent party to defend those. These kinds of issues in the Nordic countries are perhaps taken in for granted... It is so eye opening to meet new cultures and see student life also from perspectives out of our normal bubbles. Thank you my AESOP colleagues for teaching me so many interesting lessons on how Universities are run in the Caucasus area. I will miss you guys!

/Viime viikolla olin viimeisellä AESOP-projektin reissulla eli lopetuskonferenssissa Kutaisissa, Georgiassa. Tämä projektihan on vienyt minut moniin eksoottisiin kohteisiin Kaukasuksella: Azerbajzan, Georgia ja Ukraina ovat olleet tämän Erasmus+ projektin kohdemaita ja me Eurooppalaiset yliopistot olemme päässeet jakamaan hyviä käytänteitä opiskelijoiden oikeuksien varmistamiseksi ja sekä toimimaan projektin laadunvarmistuskomiteana. Projektin aikana suunniteltiin useampikin kyselylomake perustettujen Ombudsmen -toimistojen ja niihin liittyvän koulutuksen vaikuttavuudesta. Mielenkiintoista on ollut lisäksi pohtia sitä, onko Ombdusmen -toimistojen perustaminen Kaukasukselle sittenkään kovin erilaista kuin Eurooppaan - lopulta kyse on luottamussuhteen rakentamisesta Ombudsmen-henkilön&toimiston ja opiskelijoiden välille, jotta he uskaltaisivat ottaa yhteyttä tähän auktoriteettiin ongelmiensa ratkaisemiseksi. Kirjoitteilla on luonnollisesti parikin julkaisua aiheesta nyt sitten projektin viimeisten kuukausien aikana. 

Henkilökohtaisesti antoisinta on kuitenkin ollut tutustua näihin kulttuureihin uusien kolleegohen kautta, joista on vuosien varrella tullut ystäviä. Uskoisin, että ainakin osan kanssa tulevaisuudessakin työnteko jatkuu yhdessä uusien projektihakemusten myötä. Ja onhan meillä muutama (viisi) yhteistä hankehakemusta sisällä vetämässäkin vielä... Pitäkää peukkuja!

LEA in Halmstad

The Second consortium meeting & internal Capacity Building Seminar of LEA - Learntech Accelerator was held in Halmstad, Sweden. Or in particular @Tylosand, the home of Roxette, by the beautiful west coast of Sweden.

 This time we meant serious business: Capacity Building for internal Procurers and Needs analysis for a new PPI.

What is a PPI, you might ask? The simple answer would be "Public Procurement of Innovation".

I try to make it 'earth language for you': It's when many municipalities/cities/schools all over Europe come together and say: We need to BUY this similar thing. This is what we need. Provide us with something that's better than what we've got! Of course the benefit is that banding several countries and organisations together - you should be able to get a better service deal. Let alone a better price. So it's worth it, right? Joined procurement? What do you think?

So these are the topics we used two days to discuss: On Learning Technologies - what do we actually want?

Needs.. So easy... or HARD to express.

It's easy to say 'this is my need' if you first ask: Show me your money!

But our tactic was to work with scenarios.

To build upon what we had learned in IMAILE project and moved on from there - to imagine what would be the ideal Personalised Learning Environment for our countries... for our schools.

Learntech Accelerator coordinator, finally relaxed after two-day meeting below...

What I like about this consortium is that it brings together people from different backgrounds: New, Experienced, Procurement, Industry, Learntech specialists, teachers... You name it.

Our host Halmstad made a great job in organizing this meeting.

It rained. Hard.We enjoyed. We were in the Jacuzzi at the end of the meeting. 

The food was all around divine.

Consortium meetings can be tough on coordinators... But I think there was certainly a reward in the end of this one.

I honestly think we all went home much more knowledgeable than before. Part of the work is understanding the topic: Learntech procurement. Part of the work is understanding each other.

We are a young consortium. Still, some tricks to learn. And how about the coordinator? Getting there.
