Artificial Intelligence Ready Classroom

 

Today I am once again visiting Ruhr West Hochschule in Bottrup, Germany to kick-off our 4-year long project, Artificial Intelligence Aware Classroom.

The idea of this project is to assist teachers and students to use AI in Classrooms. We will create learning scenarios linked to AI competency framework as well as to curriculum of 7 to 12 grade.

We have a small but efficient project team from Lithuania (Vilnus Tech), Germany (Ruhr West), Greece (Ellinogermaniki Agogi) and of course us, the Finns (University of Jyväskylä)

This topic seems to be trending in 2023: The discussions on how ChatGPT will interrupt teaching are already on-going! How will the teachers be able to recognize whether the student did their own homework or did AI do it for them?

The discussions also included on how we will do research around this topic, how to publish and how to build social media campaigns on the topic.

As usual, the project which firstly seems to have a long time to do the initial reporting, will have to work quite intensively this Spring.

Luckily we are an efficient team that so far is enjoying the work...

We even had time to visit a closed coal mine as our sightseeing part! Fantastic times as always. Thank you for hosting, Ruhr West!

 /Tänään suunnittelimme tekoäly-luokkahuoneessa projektille aktiviteetteja ja tutkimusta seuraavan 4 vuoden ajaksi. Tällä hetkellä keskustelu ChatGPT:n käytöstä käy kuumana myös suomalaisessa mediassa.  Ajatuksena on tuottaa sisältöä ja tutkimusta tukemaan opettajien työtä ja oppilaiden oppimista tekoälyavusteisesti luokkahuoneissa yläkoulussa ja toisella asteella (lukio+ammatillinen). Kuin aina, oli mukava vierailla keski-Saksassa.

IMAILE goes ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2017

 Today I am in Berlin for Online Educa, or OEB Conference. This is due to my two projects in innovative procurement of learning technology: IMAILE & Learntech Accelerator (LEA).

 IMAILE became a part of an interactive session called:

Opportunities and Challenges for Education Start-ups in the European Market: Understanding Your Customers' Needs

In this session, we the panelists told our various stories of connecting with the users. Having supply & demand on the same page would be something that would make software projects succeed... However, specifically in the field of Education, this is rarely the case. One of the reasons is that in the field of education, the buyer is very rarely the user. Whatever learning technology you are buying - it's usually the city or the municpality or the school or the parent who pays... and the teacher/learner/student/pupil that uses... Perhaps this is a simple case of broken phone: Developer to seller to buyer to user... That's a long journey and the information gets lost in the middle. The users also do not know what they want or what they could be asking for... And on the other hand the developers can't really spend enough time thinking of the user's needs... They are busy coding. It's someone else's problem to collect the user needs... And when none of these people in the chain speak the same language... well, that's when money and time gets lost... That's why there's many-MANY learning (and other) technologies out there, that never simply get used.

The discussion was so vivid that it went on for one hour after the panel ended with the audience joining in... People just simply were not leaving. It is rare that I have been a part of a conference program item with this much depait, interest and it's simply a very satisfactory experience. It told me that there is clearly need for European projects like IMAILE and LEA, supporting the learning technology innovation within Europe.

 This was my first visit to Online Educa, even though of course my colleagues have been going for years.

 I also had the privilage to attend my professor Jan Pawlowski's learning cafe workshop on using OER in Public Administration.

 Conferences like OEB are always a good idea. To meet all the key players in the area - I figured that in the 4-5hours that I invested today in talking to all the PLEs in the market, I save about 2 weeks of my time next year trying to map who is on what level of innovation...

Run into some familiar face...

 So basically I had the whole Friday to go through stand to stand, asking about learning analytics - about adaptive learning paths - gamification - virtual reality - augmented reality... And so on.

 I had also the privilege to listen in to some innovative speakers. This panel was on open education. It is interesting to see people still talking about OER - even though the buzz on MOOCs is long gone and the field has somehow moved on...

  I also thought to myself that perhaps Germany it's a bubble of its own... It promotes certain topics beyond the rest of the world.

 Still, Online Educa... Very much worth to visit...

 I sneaked into virtual reality to shoot some classroom walls even.

 It was also quite amazing to see so many Finns here. When walking the corridors, almost at all times, you can hear Finnish spoken.

 My little spying scouting trip turned out much more useful than I could have ever imagined...

I am sorry my Berlin friends, to have disapointed pretty much everyone for not being really up for more than work here. It was my intention to do more, but I have been under the weather with a cold. Still - Good times. See you again shortly!

Rappioromantiikkaa

  Loma. Syysloma. Mikä se on? Onks mulla sellainen?

Mun syysloma tuli hieman puskista ja vie mut kahteen hienoon kaupunkiin maailmassa, niiden nimet on Berliini ja Mikkeli. Olin Berliinissä myös viime vuonna.

 Nämä kuvat ovat viime vuodelta.

 Hengailin silloin ystävieni Vanten ja Elinan kanssa, koska he olivat Berliinissä viime vuonna V:n postdokkailemassa. 

 Lisäksi tänäkin vuonna syynä on ystävien näkemisen lisäksi myös Kempoleiri.

 Koska olin viime vuonna niin kovassa hädässä väikkärini kanssa, en mitenkään pystynyt fotaroimaan kuvia tapahtumasta tänne teidän iloksenne. Toimikoon ne nyt tässä aasinsiltana uusille kuville.

. Kyllä tulee tämäkin henkireikä, taas niin kovasti tarpeeseen.

 Viime vuonna Berliinin markkinoilta tuli ostettua myös tämä ihana nahkalaukku, jota olen sittemin käyttänyt joka ainoa päivä töissä. Hyvä ostos siis. Ja vielä mietin, et mahtuuko siihen kaksi läppäriä ja yksi kamera.

Elina vei minut ihaniin rappioromanttisiin paikkoihin.

 Istuttiin lokakuun lopun tunnelmallisissa kahviloissa.

 

Ja käyskenneltiin DDR:n lehtimerissä.

 Tykkään rappioromanttisesta tunnelmasta.

 Se on jotenkin melankolista, jotenkin undergroundia, jotenkin kuitenkin siinä on sitä jotakin.

 Jotakin kaunista.

 Minulla ja Elinalla oli vain yksi päivä, siihen mahtui yhdet markkinat, vähän karonkkamekon kankaiden hankintaa... Yksi kirkko... Ja silleen. 

 Vuodessa Berliini ei ole juurikaan muuttunut, ongelmat ovat yhä samoja.

 Mutta samalla täällä on edelleen...

 Rappioromanttista.

 Melankolista.

 

 Ja kaunista.

 Näinkin surkeaan aikaan vuodesta kuin loppusyksystä.

 Berliini on kaupunki, jossa olen käynyt kohtuullisen usein, mutta oikeastaan nähnyt siitä ööh - en mitään. Syynä siihen on ollut että tulen sinne yleensä tapaamaan ystäväni ja lyömään heitä nenään. BATS2016, here we come. Aion BATSin lisäksi ehtiä tutustua myös Joihinkin nähtävyyksiin. Tänä vuonna kun agendassa ei ole joku karonkkamekko... Mistä tulikin mieleeni että tarttisin karonkkamekon - Elina, jos luet tätä niin olkootten varoitettu... N:n karonkka on näet parin kolmen viikon päästä... Teemana on hait... Luulisin. Voitaisko käyttää se kangas, joka jäi Cersei-mekosta viime vuodelta..?

 /Today I'm in Berlin once more to meet friends (and family) and punch them to the face. It is time For BATS, Berlin Autumn Training Seminar... This event has become one Of the most popular Shorinji Kempo events Of the year, in Europe. This time It is attracting over 80 kenshis from all over. I am not surprised, the athmosphere of this gasshuku is like no other... See you guys! These pictures are from last year, when I was also in town for one day earlier to meet up with a Finnish couple, some of my oldest friends, who were here for a post doc year. We had time to do some 'Falling apart romantic tourism' then with Elina, as well as to design and start the dress for my Karonkka. This time, Berlin is just a holiday and of course BATS...
