Kesäviikko meidän kanssa: Tiistai

Tältä näyttää mun aamiainen tiistaina ja keskiviikkona Barcelonassa. Aika luksusta vai mitä? Aamiaisella juttelen mm. uuden kanadalaisen ystävän kanssa. Olen ottanut tavaksi ottaa kuvan niiden ihmisten nimilapuista, joita tapaan. Siten voin myöhemmin helposti lisätä heidät Linked Innissä. / This is what my breakfast looks like on Tuesday and Wednesday in Barcelona. Pretty luxurious or what? At breakfast I talk with a woman from Canada. As you saw from my previous post, I have the tendency to take a picture of the name cards of the people I meet so that I can later on add them on Linked in.

Aamiaisen jälkeen katsastan posterialueen tarjonnan. /After breakfast I go through the poster area.

Aina mielenkiintoista on tutustua Suomalaisten tutkimuksiin.. Tässä posteri turkulaisten tutkimuksesta liittyen ylioppilaskirjoitusten digitalisoimiseen. / It is always interesting to see research from Finland. There is a poster about the matriculation examination becoming electronic done by University of Turku people.

Käyn otattamassa itsestäni virallisen konferenssikuvan. /I go and get an official conference picture taken of me.

Tällaista jälkeä tällä kertaa. Viime vuoden kuvaaja oli parempi minusta. Päällä minulla oli kiinaesitystäni varten valkattu jakku. / This is me in there, last year's photographer was better I thought. I was wearing a Chinese jacket for my Chinese presentation in the morning.

Aamun kahvitaukoa varten oltiin jo laittelemassa pöytiä koreaksi. Minulla oli aamiaisesta vielä sen verran lyhkäinen aika, että jätin tämän väliin, mutta ne, joiden yö oli venähtänyt, saivat tästä aamupalan 10:45 maissa. /The first coffee break was being laid out, but I certainly was not hungry since my breakfast had been perfect. I suspect this is for those who skip breakfast after a late night to get some lay in in the mornings.

Hengailualueella on myös kartta, johon saa laittaa, mistä on tullut. Minä huijasin hieman ja laitoin sekä Jyväskylän että Xi'anin kartalle. /In the hangout zone there is a map where you can pin point your homes, so I put two pins in, one for Jyväskylä and one for Xi'an. No one else had come from those places, so I felt pretty unique - I've got two homes and I am the sole ambassador in this conference from them.

No sitten törmäilen näytteilleasettajien kanssa. Yksi on myshowcase.me, joka näyttää olevan ns. avoin kompetenssiportfolio-ohjelma. Ajattelen, että tästä voisi olla meille kiinnostava partneri tulevaisuuden projektihakemuksiin, joten käytän jonkun hetken small talkiin heidän edustajansa kanssa. Vaihdamme yhteystietoja. / Then I go through the show rooms of technology etc companies around. There's an online portfolio/competence showcase company called myshowcase.me present. Seems to be a UK company that has a promising business consept thinking of future project proposals so I use some time for small talk there.

Paikalla alkaa olla porukkaa. / People are gathering up.

No sitten menen aamun ekaan esitykseeni, jossa puhun suomalaisyritysten kaupallistamisesta Kiinaan, kuinkas muutenkaan. /My first presentation of the day is about commercialising Finnish companies to the Chinese market... But the readers of this blog should already know that's what I do for living this year.

Minun esitykseni jälkeen alan kirjoitella blogipostausta Barcelonasta vielä kuunnellen muiden sessioita. / After my presentation I start writing a blog post about Barcelona, still listening in other people's presentations.

What's uppailen sukulaisten kanssa. / I also tell my relatives back in Finland what is going on. We have quite an active What's up group.

Aion olla etukäteisviisas ja tilaan nettilipun Sacrada Familiaan huomiselle. / I buy a ticket to Sacrada Familia for tomorrow morning. There is no access to the towers available with this little time to spare:(

Sitten tapahtuu jotain kummallista. Koko hotellista menee sähköt. Pian huomaamme, että myös läheiset liikennevalot ovat poissa käytöstä, joten ongelma on koko kaupungin osan kokoinen. /Then something weird and spooky happens. The whole hotel looses electricity. We soon notice that also the close by traffic lights are out of power so the problem is in fact with the whole city block.

Cyber kiusaamisesta esitystä vetänyt kenraali jatkaa puhettaan ilman powerpointtia pimeässä joka sopii hänen aiheeseensa itseasiassa. Hän kertoo, että Floridassa, josta hän tulee, kaikki ovat sitä mieltä, että koululaisilla pitäisi olla lupa kantaa asetta mukana koulussa(!)/The former general, now a professor who was talking about Cyber bullying as his topic, continues his presentation in the dark, which kind of suits his topic. He tells us that in fact all the parents in Florida feel that their kids should be allowed to come to school with guns...

Kirjoitan blogipostiani pimeässä, mutta lähden puolen tunnin päästä haahuilemaan kännykän taskulampun kanssa. Hissit eivät luonnollisestikaan toimi... / I write my blog post in the dark but as the lights have not come in 30 minutes, I gather my things and start walking with the cell phone flash light. Of course the elevators are not working.

Konferenssi jatkaa muutaman kerroksen verran hotellin hätäsähkövarannolla. MInä päätän kävellä hotellihuoneeseeni ottamaan torkut - ehkäpä tunnin päästä tilanne on jo ohi. 14 kerrosta ylöspäin hop - ilmeisesti treenini ovat toimineet, sillä tämä ei aiheuta minulle minkäänlaisia vaikeuksia. Pitäisi kävellä portaita useamminkin. / The conference is functioning in two floors with the hotel's emergency power. I decide to walk up 14 floors to my room to have a nap since not much is on. Maybe in one hour, this will be better. 14 floors seems to be actually a very light effort to me, thank you HIIT trainings which are a lot harder to do, I can tell you that.

Unien jälkeen valot eivät ole palanneet ja 11.kerroksessa fiilis on kuin Walking Deadissa. / After my one hour sleep the lights have not gone back on and in the 11th floor the feeling is like in Walking Dead. You expect zombies to attack any minute now.

Niinpä käppäilen alas. /So I take the walk down.

Alimmissa kerroksissa ei ole porraskäytävässä valoa, joten vastaan tulee staffia sytytellen kynttilöitä. Sähkökatkos on kestänyt jo ainakin 1,5h tähän mennessä. / At the lowest levels there is no sun light coming to the stairs so I run into staff which is lighting up candles. The power cut has lasted 1,5hours by now.

MItä yllättävimmin varasähköllä on kuitenkin saatu aikaan lounas. Otan oluen koska olen sen tarpeessa ja juttelen saksalaisen opettajan kanssa. / Surprisingly the emergency power has been enough to produce lunch for a 1000 people, so I sit down, have a beer (really needed now) and talk with a German guy at my table.

Tämän konferenssin järjestäjät todella tietävät, miten sosialisointia avustetaan. /The organisers of this conference are really smart in the way they have facilitated social interaction between the participants.

Lounastus tapahtuu 8hengen pyöreissä pöydissä. /Lunches are eaten in 8 person tables, where you surely end up talking to a bunch of new people.

Saksalainen kolleegani asuu unkarissa, koska siellä on paremmat työmahdollisuudet. / My new German friend has moved to Hungary to get a better job opportunity.

Iltapäivällä sähköt palaavat ja vaikka kuinka olisin toivonut sitä, ei kakkosesitystäni ole peruttu:/ Joten puhun sitten oppimateriaalipankkien ongelmista ja siitä, miten niiden menestystä voidaan mitata. / In the afternoon, I am not so luck to have my second presentation cancelled, so I talk about the success (and problems) of learning object repositories.. This topic seems to be going down well with the audience as it raises questions and people can relate to the barriers of using such databases.   

Huh huh että päivä on jo ollut pitkä, mutta kuuden jälkeen pulahdan kuitenkin taas uimaan, jotta saan jotain liikuntaa tähän viikkoon. Puolituntia ja kilsa, siihen on aikaa. Sitten näytän fööniä ja kiharrinta tukalle ja iltalook on valmis: /  It's been quite a long day already but after six I go for a kilometre swim to get some sports done this week. Then it's time to fix my hair for another night out in a white dress.

Konferenssin lopetuskokkarit. / Conference ending coctails.

Juttelen ties kuinka monen tyypin kanssa. mm. tämän 22-vuotiaan kandiopiskelijan kanssa, joka on vahingossa saanut paperinsa sisään... / I talk with a lot of people while sipping my sparkling wine. For example this 22 year old Bachelor student from Glasgow who is hanging out with two indians... Neither can understand each others' english so they've had quite a nice chat before I get there obviously.

Mut sitten tapahtuu jotain odottamatonta. Törmään entiseen kolleegaani 8v takaa! Olin ollut varma, etten tunne täältä ketään, mutta niinpä vain täytyy sanoa, että jos on ollut yhdellä alalla töissä kohta kymmenen vuotta niin johan sitä tuntee paljon ihmisiä. Vaihdellaan kuulumisia ja hän esittelee minut kolleegoilleen. Vietetään varsin hilpeää iltaa yhdessä jutellen./But then something special happens, I run into an old colleague from 8 years back. We have seen each other last maybe 6 years ago and it's obviously trip down memory lane for us. I'm so happy to see him as I was convinced I didn't know anyone from this conference... But then again, if you've worked in one field for 10 years, I guess it is time that I confess to actually knowing a lot of people... He introduces me to his collegues from Liverpool and we have a blast night out chattering.

Pakollinen baarin vessaselfie. / Mandatory bar loo selfie.

Käydään parilla naapuriston baarissa kun coctail-kutsut päättyvät. /After the coctails run out we continue to a local pub.

Noin kahden aikaan yöllä törmään random brasilialaiseen neitoon terassilla, joka haluaa huonolla englanninkielellään kertoa minulle konferenssimatkastaan (hän on paennut äitiään, jonka kanssa jakaa hotellihuoneensa). Yritän lähteä nukkumaan, mut hänen tarinansa vaan jatkuu ja jatkuu... Apua! Lopulta pakenen nukkumaan/ About two am, I run into a chain smoking brasilian girl on the hotel terrace who holds me hostage by telling me stories of her conference experiences with her really bad english. She's obviously despreate to find anyone to talk with at 2am since she is sharing a room with her mother who is calling her every 5minutes. I do charity listening for about 30minutes and then excuse myself - Even I need to sleep sometimes!
